I went to satsang with Stephen Bodian Friday April 13 (OMG!!! http://imdb.com/title/tt0080761 ) and i highly, highly, highly recommend this guy. He seems very real and knowledgeable, down to earth, and pleasant, so he wins on all 3 counts!!!

The next satsang with him is going to be on Sunday April 22, 2007 from 6:30-8:00 PM @ at Casa de Luz, 1701 Toomey, Austin, TX (off Barton Springs near Lamar). I'll be going again as long as there are no holds barring me, so please join me if you're interested!!!

Here's the info on satsang again:

Satsang (Sanskrit for "being together in truth") is a sacred opportunity to inquire together into the nature of reality. The living words that are spoken in satsang have the power to awaken us from the dream of separation to the truth of our undivided essential nature. In satsang we point directly to the truth that can't be known by the mind, until the mind gives up, rolls over, and allows true realization to blossom. Each satsang consists of a rich blend of silent meditation, teaching, and dialogue.

Regular Satsangs in Austin, Texas

You don't need to practice for years to recognize the timeless simplicity of your essential nature--you merely need to see beyond the veil of thoughts and feelings to the awake, aware presence that has always been gazing through these eyes and living through this body and mind. Whether the glimpse is dramatic or subtle, it has the potential to transform your life forever, opening you to a new dimension of peace, love, and joy.

Join us for a warm and enlivening exploration of our essential nature. Join us for satsang.

Hey there everybody,

Thanks to everyone who came this time. It was a lively discussion. For the week of the 18th we'll be discussing Part 2 of Adyashanti's True Meditation which is a treatise on the art of self-inquiry, which in his mind is one of the 2 wings necessary, along with the practice of "letting everything be as it is", in order to get this spiritual airplane off the ground!!!

Also, there was some talk about belief systems today, and since I think Jim, my teacher, has such an accurate idea of the nature and limitation of beliefs, I'll send the link out to the group. I think I've done this before, so if you've already seen it just ignore it:

http://spirituality.meetup.com/67/messages/boards/view/viewthread?thread=2844817

It's also on his Wisdom Mailing page: http://www.jimdreaver.com/wisdomailing.html with caps and underscores for more emphasis. It starts at "The Longing for Freedom". Btw, the rest of the Wisdom Mailing is a very good resource in my opinion.

And if you have time, peep this video on "The Biological Necessity of Awakening" It's only 5 minutes and I LOVE this video!!! It echoes my sentiments on what could happen in the near future. Eckhart Tolle also talks about similar things in his writings. It is frightening, but also exciting too!!!

Also, I keep forgetting to ask for donation money, so if you can contribute $1-2 a month to cover the meetup account cost that would be nice.

The Paypal link for donations is here:

but for some reason it wants to charge $3 for shipping and handling, so if you're not ok with this hold off as I've emailed support to try to figure it out.

See you soon!!!

Hey Everybody,

I've decided to go to Stephen Bodian's satsang this coming Friday. A couple people I trust have taken up for this guy, and say he's very real. Also, he was given transmission to teach from Adyashanti, who is probably my favorite spiritual teacher at the moment, and he's studied with my teacher's master Jean Klein. So I think he probably is who he says he is. The link to his webpage regarding the satsang is here:

http://www.stephanbodian.org/satsang.htm

Let me know if you can make it. It would be great if some of you from the group could go!!!

The fee is $10/person.

Here's some info on satsang from Mr. Bodian's page:

Hey there everybody,

Great second meeting!!! I had a good time, and I hope everyone else did too. Judging from the fact that some of us stayed till 10:30, I reckon you did!

I'm going to make the homework assignment for next week this Gangaji video. It will be fun to see what everyone thinks, and also it will be nice to get a female teacher in, to balance all this maleness that's been going on!!! As always this isn't mandatory, but since we'll be focusing on it, it will be helpful if you can watch it.

So the title of the video is: Revealing Strategies of the Ego. This is a GREAT video. It's basically about self-acceptance, and not making ego "wrong". So, there's talk about how the ego can come in "through the back door" as some put it, or what she calls the "super ego" which pretends to be "god's emissary". An example of this would be how one can make their self wrong for things that may arise which aren't considered stereotypically "spiritual". "I'm bad for being so judgmental", etc. As Gangaji says "Only ego has a problem with ego". GREAT teaching!!! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did!!!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5165452361778329471

In addition, something that was brought up was: What's the difference between a direct experience and belief systems? Here's what my teacher has to say about it, and I feel he's very "right on". We can discuss this too next week, but since I don't want to inundate you guys this is secondary:

http://spirituality.meetup.com/67/messages/boards/view/viewthread?thread=2844817

Also, I keep forgetting to ask for a donation to cover the cost of the meetup account, so I'm just going to do it the old fashioned way, whatever that means! Here's a link to a Paypal donation box. Just $1-2 a month is fine, and if you don't want to, that's fine too. It is a donation after all. The meetup account costs $12/month just so you know. And I think we should use the leftover donation money to start a library, which lends books and stuff out to members. Here's the catch. I don't want the responsibility to have to look over the extra money and the library part, so if someone would be interested in doing that part of it I would be very grateful!!! Also, if some of you have some books you want to donate which are relevant to the subject matter, then it would be great to have those as well!!!

Here's the link to the donation box:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=sho%40shogeist%2ecom&item_name=Monthly%20Cost%20for%20the%20Austin%20%22True%22%20Spirituality%20Meetup%20Account&no_shipping=1&return=http%3a%2f%2fspirituality%2emeetup%2ecom%2f67&cancel_return=http%3a%2f%2fspirituality%2emeetup%2ecom%2f67&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=USD&lc=US&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8

As a final note (slightly off topic, but in a way not really), here's a link to an amazing documentary on Ayahuasca shamanism called Shamans of the Amazon (appropriate enough, right? ;) I just thought I'd post it in case any of you are interested in learning more about Ayahuasca, and that amazing tradition from the Amazon:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8714482344821425610

Also, an amazing article by Kira Salak, which intrigued me to the point of making me go down to Peru to experience this for myself is here: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/0603/features/peru.html

While I don't agree with everything said necessarily, I did meet Kira when I was in Peru and I can attest to her strong commitment to the truth, and she is VERY hardcore. Some of the stories she was telling me about the places she's been on assignment were just incredible. So mad props to her. I am very grateful to her that I found out about Ayahuasca, and was able to have the experience with it as a plant teacher.

See you soon!!!

Great second meeting!!!

This time I want to focus on what's termed "spiritual materialism", specifically the part of it where egoically one can either claim to be enlightened, when clearly it's not the case, or one can have a "holier than thou" attitude: I'm more spiritual than you are and thus am superior. I think both of these are instances of an egoic self wanting or needing to be seen in a certain way because it fears destruction or being "less than" (which is ultimately all of egoic behavior, right?), and spirituality can be seen as a way of strengthening the sense of self. In fact, maybe it's the ultimate way the egoic self can strengthen itself, since we're dealing with the realm of the formless here where things don't initially seem to be so clear cut.

I was talking with Jim, my teacher, about this and I brought up the point that in the movie Little Buddha (yes, with the hilarity of Keanu Reeves, and his horribly contrived Indian accent, playing the part of the Buddha) the last thing the Buddha had to face before realizing his true nature was the egoic self telling him that he was a god. After the Buddha saw through this and called on the Earth Goddess to be witness, he reached liberation. The point was that this was the last obstacle, and it seems to me a very serious one. Jim told me that even after he reached the awakened state he had to let go of the story around being someone who was enlightened. I think his point was that that was one of the last places "the little me" was holding on, IE having a sense of identity as someone who was enlightened. Not that he didn't know he was enlightened, but it was more about letting go of a story or identity around it.

Chogyam Trungpa said that, "The problem is that ego can convert anything to its own use, even spirituality.", and as far as I know he's the one who coined the term "spiritual materialism". The homework assignment this week is to read this article:

http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/tib/cutting.htm

so we can discuss it next time. Just FYI it is long, so if you don't have time, read the part starting from the heading on Spiritual Materialism down to the Q&A.

I particularly like this passage:

"We have studied so much. We may have studied Western
philosophy or Oriental philosophy, practiced yoga or perhaps studied
under dozens of great masters. We have achieved and we have
learned. We believe that we have accumulated a hoard of knowledge.
And yet, having gone through all this, there is still something to
give up. It is extremely mysterious! How could this happen?
Impossible! But unfortunately it is so. Our vast collections of
knowledge and experience are just part of ego's display, part of the
grandiose quality of ego. We display them to the world and, in so
doing, reassure ourselves that we exist, safe and secure, as
"spiritual" people."

This is basically what I'm talking about and want to address. I will say that some of what he's saying can sound cold or unfeeling, and I think this can stem from a misconception. We'll talk about this too at the meeting.

See you soon!

David H.

By the way, if you guys can contribute $1-2 a month to help me cover the costs of the meetup account I would greatly appreciate it!!! So please remind me to bring this up at the meeting. Like Michael McDonald I keep forgetting!!! ;)

Great first meeting!!!

We decided to have weekly "homework" assignments. Of course these are not mandatory, but since we're going to discuss the previous week's homework assignment at the next week's meeting, it will be helpful if you are able to participate.

The first assignment is to watch these 3 (or however many you have time for) videos of Adyashanti, and we can discuss them at the next meeting.

This is our first meetup!!!

For the first meeting let's introduce ourselves, and tell each other why we're interested in the group. Maybe name some of our favorite teachers and why we like them; whether it's because of what they do, or what they have to teach, etc.

Also, I plan to start a lending library to loan out books, audio, and video. So if everyone could contribute $1-2 per month to help cover these costs, and the cost of the meetup account, that would be great!!! :)
